Artist Statement
I upcycle analog materials to create surreal collages. In my mixed media craft you will find vintage books, magazines & advertisements, leaves & mushrooms, paints & poetry.
I am Cristian / artist name Menumortu. Collaging started for me 11 years ago in Moldova with vintage soviet & cheap fashion magazines. I pursued collaging while studying psychology in Romania & the Netherlands, and after a short pause, I dedicated myself to be a professional artist in Switzerland.
Two large streams feed into my artistic expression: Psychology (quirkiness of the human mental & emotional space ) and Environmentalism (dis/connection to the natural world). I put special focus where they meet – internalized capitalism (fixation on productivity as a source of self-worth, hyper-commodification, expectation of linear growth, consumption as coping mechanism).
On this darker side, I reflect visually on hustle culture, burnout & emotional exhaustion, and information overload. On the lighter side, I celebrate how surreal, complex & colorful life can be, and how amusing & endearing it is to be human.
I draw inspiration from observing people (through my psychology training & therapy), from questioning “normal” modern habits such as phone & social media use, and from hiking and foraging for plants & mushrooms. Advocating for slow & mindfull living, my artist process is patient; I “hunt” for and gather books & natural materials, I leaf through the stacks and select, cut, rip, burn – then I glue together.
